What You Need to Know about Water Damage Insurance

When you are standing ankle-deep in your flooded house, after the pipe busted or the rainwater came through the roof, you probably won’t think about the insurance claim. You’ll be so desperate to get rid of the water, dry your home and save as many things as you can that you may even throw away some of the damaged items that can help you with your insurance claim.

Insurance companies can deny coverage if permanent repairs are made or damaged items are thrown away as there is no concrete evidence left to make the claim. This is why it is important to not do anything that can affect the claim procedure. We’ll enunciate some useful water damage insurance tips to help you with your claim if need ever comes.

1. Know the Insurance Policy

You must first understand what your home insurance policy covers. Homeowner policies provide coverage for water damage that is accidental or sudden. For example, if a pipe bursts, water heater ruptures or water line breaks, you’ll be provided coverage. However, if the damage resulted from your own negligence, you won’t be compensated in any way.

2. Insurance Company Must be Notified Immediately

If water damage strikes, you must immediately notify your insurance company. Note your policy number and be sure to provide everything they ask for. When informing the insurance company about the damage, never say the word “flood” as standard homeowner insurance doesn’t cover floods. You should also keep record of all conversations, notifications, letters or other documents your insurance company sends you.

3. Document the Damage

You must present evidence to the insurance company as they won’t take your word for it. Take pictures and record videos of the damaged things before the repairs and after the repairs have been made as it will allow the insurance agent to assess the damage. Preserve the damaged items so that you can show how much loss you’ve suffered.

If water damage was caused because of involvement of others (the technician made a mistake when repairing the air conditioner or the neighbor left the water running), you must document this and provide the name, address, contact information, etc., of those who were involved.

4. Mitigate Loss

Don’t get caught up with the insurance claims so much that you forget about removing water from your home to prevent more damage. Mitigation measures should be taken to remove water and make the repairs without affecting the claim process.

This involves removing standing water, drying the soaked things, fixing broken windows or doors, spraying disinfectants to prevent mold growth and any other necessary repair. It is best to hire a professional water damage restoration company to perform the mitigation work, as most homeowners cannot complete the restoration process on their own.

5. File the Claim

Once you’ve reviewed the policy and gathered all the required information, you must prepare and send an official written claim to your insurance company. After few days, the insurance providers will send an adjuster who’ll inspect your home.
