Popular Bathroom Remodeling Trends for 2017
Friday, June 30, 2017

It is never smart to do major renovations that include all the latest fads that can seemingly change overnight leaving you with an outdated home and a lot of wasted time and money.  However, there are some trends in design right now that are proving to be both functionally and aesthetically pleasing and promise to be around for a while.  Let’s look at a few bathroom remodel ideas that may inspire your next project.

#1: An Inner Sanctum

As both work and personal lives become more entwined and more and more people are finding themselves in need of a break from computers, cells phones and other sources of stress, open concept designs is beginning to take a back seat to more defined living spaces. Bathrooms are trending more than ever toward being a retreat; a place that makes people feel safe, comfortable, and a bit pampered.  Adding spa-like amenities seems a far better choice than hustling off through mad traffic to an overcrowded gym full of people when you need to relax. And, adding on a steam shower or installing a spa-tub doesn’t have to break the bank as there are some very reasonably priced options that will allow you to have your own spa retreat without ever leaving the house.

#2: Adding a Wow Factor to Powder Rooms

Another recent trend is adding a bit of luxury especially in small spaces like powder rooms. Not only are you able to add a bit of your own personal style with a bit of whimsy or functional art but the space is small so you don’t have to have an excessively large budget and adding clever design elements like dramatic materials, lighting, and sculptural forms will also add value to these smaller spaces.

#3: Wet Rooms as A Universal Design Approach

Universal Design, the design of products and environments so that they are usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design has typically been primarily about providing access for the elderly and disabled.  The trend toward “wet rooms” – curbless and often open showers that allow greater ease of access -- however, are becoming much more prevalent as younger and non-disabled homeowners see the convenience and beauty of replacing bathtubs with wet rooms aka walk-in showers.  With that in mind, there is also a turn toward adding a free-standing tub such as a claw-foot or the more modern soaking tub in addition to the walk-in shower.
