How Much Does a Bathroom Renovation Cost
Sunday, July 24, 2016

One of the first things clients want to know when considering a future bathroom renovation is, “How much will this bathroom project cost us?” Since each project is unique, the answer is always, “That depends.”

The total costs quoted in a contractor’s estimate vary according to a range of factors, including total bathroom square footage, layout changes, material quality and so on.

5 Factors That Affect How Much a Bathroom Renovation Will Cost

According to homeadvisor.com, who based their averages on nearly 10,000 cost profiles, the average price spent on bathroom renovations ranges from $5,639 to $12,912, with high-end projects coming in at around $20,000. That’s quite a spread, which makes it difficult to quote a single price until a design-build team has a better idea of the scope of your project.

These prices vary for a handful of reasons, including:

  1. Square footage. The cost to remodel a powder room measuring 20 sq. ft. will cost less than a master bathroom remodel measuring 100 sq. ft., assuming they use the same quality of materials. So, square footage is an important factor, but it is not the sole driver of your estimate total.
  2. Quality of the materials used. The type and quality of the materials you select will be one of the biggest factors in how much a bathroom renovation will cost. You can purchase cost effective, pre-fabricated cabinets at a local big box store, or you can have custom cabinetry built to your specifications. There are fiberglass bath/shower combo inserts and then there are stand alone soaker tubs and steam showers with thick glass doors and unique tile work. Then, there are the sinks, faucets, toilets, flooring and tile to consider. The price difference between standard and luxury features can be exponential.
  3. Craftsmanship. There are laborers and then there are craftsmen. The former have a job to do, and they do it. The latter are artisans and take great pride in the work they perform. A craftsman doesn’t cut corners or use shoddy materials. They are perfectionists and won’t leave until they are happy with the finished product and the job site is clean and back to ship-shape.  Choosing to invest in quality craftsmanship is a decision you will never regret. A craftsman stands behind their work and will fix anything that doesn’t meet or exceed the industry standard.
  4. Changes in layout. It may seem simple to move the toilet here, add a sink there or relocate the shower to a different corner of the room. In fact, seemingly “simple” layout changes can cost thousands of dollars, depending on the required structural changes, additional plumbing and/or electrical work that needs to be done, and so on. Often, a contractor can’t give you a concrete idea of the total cost until they have opened up the wall space to see existing construction.
  5. Unforeseen snafus. Finally, there are the “unknowns,” the factors that are impossible to predict until the project is underway. This can include mold or mildew that needs to be cleaned up, structural rot that must be repaired or outdated plumbing that has to be replaced. Perhaps a specific fixture you planned to install is back ordered and must be rushed to arrive on time. For these reasons, we recommend including a 20% “contingency” fund that can be used in the event of an unanticipated hitch. That way a worst-case-scenario will still keep you within your budget limits
