5 Reasons Why the New Year is the Best Time to Renovate or Remodel
Sunday, July 24, 2016

Seize the season! Contemplating when to start ccessn upcoming renovation or remodel? Pick up that phone (or click on those “contact us” hyperlinks) and reach out to local contractors, because the start of a new year is one of the best times to remodel your home.

Homeowners often make the mistake of thinking summertime is the best time to start a new construction project. In fact, the summer is the beginning of the busy season for contractors, which peaks in the fall. Sure, a new exteriorproject might be more difficult to commence in blustery weather, but any renovations that take place inside can be done regardless of what Mother Nature has planned.

In the winter months, after the holidays, homeowners are more likely to benefit from immediate attention from contractors looking to fill their calendar, and that comes along with more competitive pricing and other New Year benefits.

The following are five reasons why the new year is the best time to renovate or remodel:

  1. You’re the star. A conscientious contractor should be responsive to any new client, but it’s difficult to give prospects the attention they deserve when the construction schedule is packed. Since the demand for projects declines in the winter, clients enjoy prompt responses, gain the benefit of thorough consultations and often have access to higher-end contractors for a more competitive price. The good news is that if you find a contractor you love, and who you work well with, you’ll be set to go when it’s time to commence some of those exterior or larger-scale projects that require warmerweather.

  2. Enjoy more competitive prices. It’s true that contractors looking for work will offer more competitive prices, but you’ll also enjoy the benefit of close-out sales and pre-spring pricing. Many vendors offer significantly slashed prices on fixtures and furnishings in order to make way for the neweryear’s models. Examples include windows, cabinets and lumber products, all of which experience price hikes in the spring. The New Year is a great time to take advantage of winter price reductions, enjoying a remodel that costs notably less than if you waited just a couple more months.

  3. Smooth sailing at the building department. Some remodels and renovationsmust be permitted and inspected by the local building department. It makes sense, then, that the busy season for contractors is the peak season for building officials. By starting a remodel at the beginning of the year, you’re less likely to have to wait for pending approvals, and permitting and inspections progress more efficiently too.

  4. Hooray for tax season. If you get a head start and file your taxes early, you’ll have quicker access to tax returns, and what better way to spend them than on long-awaited home improvements? Another bonus: special tax incentives and rebates offered by the Feds, as well as local municipalities. Homeowners can benefit from installing qualifying renewable energy systems, HVAC or roof systems and water-saving plumbing fixtures, for example.

  5. You are accessible. Homeowners often think it’s a great idea to schedule the bulk of a remodel or renovation while they’re on vacation. While living in a home that's being remodeled can be a little noisy and dusty, it’s important that you are around. Your contractor needs you to be available toconsult if any unforeseen complications arise, or occasionally to get input and approval. If you’re out of town, it can delay the project.
