Can Replacing Your Windows Improve Your Health?
Saturday, June 10, 2017
While it is important to have windows that are energy efficient, keeping you cool in summer and warm in the winter and saving you money long term, there are other reasons to invest in replacement windows including the immediate reward of a quieter, more attractive, and less drafty home. But, did you know that there can be health benefits to having better windows? In fact, it has been scientifically proven that a lighter, brighter home is a healthier home. Here’s why:
After a long day cooped up inside, you walk outside and into the sunshine and immediately the tensions start to bleed off, you start breathing easier and the world is a little less overwhelming. That’s because all that natural light triggers the production of serotonin, the ‘happy’ hormone that keeps depression from setting. The good news is that as little as 30 minutes of sunlight every day can keep the blues away.
Our circadian rhythm, a.k.a. Sleep-Wake Cycle, tells our bodies when they should be asleep and when to wake up. This, typically, is based on our exposure to something called blue light which we get from exposure to natural sunlight. As we get older, our eyes absorb less of the blue-spectrum light resulting in the disruption of our sleep patterns and leading to insomnia which in turn can lead to heart disease. Now you know why Florida is full of folks over 50!
Everyone knows that poor light causes eye strain and that can lead to permanent damage. Because natural lighting is stronger than artificial lighting it can aid in the prevention of eye strain when reading, watching TV or working at a computer. For children, natural light promotes healthy eye development and can diminish the development of nearsightedness. Just one more reason to get that homework done while the sun is still shining!
Exposure to sunlight helps our skin produce Vitamin D which is crucial to our bodies to assist in the prevention of cancer, heart disease, weight gain and other health conditions.
Reduction of Mold
Mold, mildew and bacteria are notorious for causing rashes, sickness and chronic respiratory illness and they all breed in dark and damp. Sunlight acts as a natural disinfectant and discourages the development of mold and other harmful organisms.
Letting in all that sunlight not only makes your home healthier, but it gives your home a bright and airy look and feel and lets you stay connected to the outdoors. So, if your windows are old, drafty, dull and more frame than glass, it may be time to upgrade to replacement windows.
Are you looking for replacement windows as part of a bathroom renovation? Need new windows for your whole home? Can’t decide on double hung or awning windows? Maybe you’re even thinking of adding on a new front door, storm door or patio door. In any case, our design services and on-site consultation are always free so call us today and let Midwest Property Pros help you let the sunshine in!
