A kitchen remodel can have a huge impact on a home’s value as well as on the owners’ enjoyment of this important space. Transforming a kitchen can make it a showpiece that the homeowner enjoys using every day and that serves as a comfortable gathering spot for family and friends.

The Challenge

The homeowner planned on staying in her home but was frustrated by the kitchen. It was laid out by the builder, with builder-grade flooring, cabinets, counters, and more. The kitchen wasn’t meeting her needs, since it lacked sufficient storage and looked dark and outdated. The family had grown since the homeowner moved into the home, so she wanted the kitchen to be a place where her family could gather and also host events. The closed-off layout didn’t lend itself to the easy flow of family or guests moving in and out of the room.

The Solution

We talked with the homeowner about her goals. Ultimately, she wanted the kitchen of her dreams, and since she plans to keep the home in the family rather than selling it, calculating a return on investment wasn’t a concern for this job.

The client wanted custom cabinetry in cashmere white to help update and brighten the space. We hand-glazed the cabinets and top-coated them with polyurethane. Granite counters were selected to complement the kitchen’s cabinetry and overall look and design.

We updated and increased the lighting with recessed can lights, as well as under-cabinet lighting with warm white LEDs. These create a clean light that’s bright and white, making it ideal for kitchen work surfaces. They’re also energy-efficient and stay cool to the touch. We also installed a chandelier, which the homeowner wanted to add in order to gain unobtrusive lighting that reflected upward, creating softer lighting.

Removing the door and the awkward pantry let us re-purpose the space and add a great deal more storage space.

Our PROs also installed an ornate back splash with decorate inlay to contrast the white cabinets. We added laminate floors in a plank style, with gray wood-grain. This color perfectly complemented the cabinetry, and the durability of the surface suits the homeowner’s needs perfectly, since she owns dogs.

The Results

Build it Brothers finished the project on time and on budget while accomplishing all of the homeowner’s goals, She now has a kitchen that suits her needs and that serves as a gathering spot for book club meetings and exercise groups.

Her kitchen now has greatly improved aesthetic appeal and function. The homeowner is ecstatic that she now has a bright, open space that she enjoys and is proud to show off as she hosts gatherings for family and friends. She’s been so happy with our work that we’ve also completed a sun-room conversion project for her.
